When I was in drivers ed, the instructors made a big deal about us learning reference points - you are up to the curb when you can see the edge of it under your sideview mirrors, for example. One day on the range, we split up into two groups to practice right and left-had turns, having just learned about the reference points to make sure we had turned far enough, using distant stationary objects. I was assigned to the left-turn group first. But I got my right and left confused, so used the right turn reference point. So I kept oversteering dramatically. Eventually, I gave up on the reference points and just turned until I thought I had turned far enough based on the road just in front of me. I did perfectly fine after that point.
